poetry: chasing crazy ideas with you

Listen to your crazy ideas

chase your crazy ideas in Christ,

not to be famous,

but to be fully-alive…

—Emily P. Freeman

Floating eggs

Horizontal stripes

Great music, films, and writing

Hardwood floors and metal

Airstream trailer trips as itinerant lovers of people

Visiting [aging mentors] Elaine Stedman, David Roper, Wendell Berry

Believing our kids will be free from false religion and false identities

Entrusting them to the Father, Great Lover and Maker of souls

Seeking to live artistically with well-chosen quality clothes, furnishings and food,

yet with frugal spareness, yet not austerity, with no excess accumulations,

spaces filled with expressions of Sarah-ness on every side

Responding to inner promptings with spontaneous generosity of time and money

Paying intimate attention to the gifts of our spouse and letting them shine

Pastoring 'outside the walls'

Befriending strangers and neighbors with the welcoming presence of Christ

Eschewing programs and formulas

Loving one another til death do us part

Healing false selves with vigorous abandon

Widening and deepening with more Christ-searching and curious friends

Imagining property with small cabins for sabbath rest for the weary soul, rest, renewal, and prayer

Traveling Light

written November 4th, 2013 by Patrick Harrison;

on flight from North Carolina to Denver

while ruminating on wise words of Emily P. Freeman at a retreat,

on what it might mean in my new marriage adventure with Sarah

to dream and chase our ‘crazy’ dreams;

11 years later, almost to the day, November 9th 2024,

we saw the property which would become ours to steward,

indeed to welcoming strangers and friends new and old, for rest and awe,

in small cabins, and … yes, as itinerant lovers at home and in an Airstream.

Addendum: Emily Freeman’s definition of art and artist:

Artist: A person who is brave enough to move toward what makes them come alive.

Art: What happens when you dare to be who you really are; when what is most alive in you is offered as a gift to others.
